Jesse lives for the present moment, rarely planning past tomorrow - which can lead to him being reckless and dangerous, for himself and for his allies. Though can also make him spontaneous and unpredictable. He can be amiable and polite when he needs or wants to be, but has a tendency to eventually hurt or abandon those he cares about if they disagree with him too much on even trivial matters, making it difficult to hold onto friendships for long with anyone that doesn't cater to his every whim. He has an indulgent streak and often drinks too much, though thankfully he mellows out when he's drunk.

• Born August 17, 1841 as the youngest of 5 children to a poor family. Jesse remembers little of his earliest years and only has the vaguest of memories of his three oldest siblings.
• Spring, 1847 - His father brought him and his brother, Rupert, to the Richmond Male Orphan Society and left them there with a vague hope that he'd come back to collect them in the fall. He never did.
• The Orphanage taught both boys to read and write and how to do basic sums. It also placed them out to various homes to help with farm chores, but neither were ever adopted.
• 1853 - Jesse makes friends with a new boy, Brody Summers, who came to the orphanage after his parents died. Brody was never all that bright, but he idolized Jesse, so the two got on well.
• 1858 - Jesse, Rupert, and Brody leave the orphanage and start heading westward for better opportunities. They pause at the Mississippi River, getting jobs working river boats. Until Jesse gets the idea to increase their earnings by robbing boat passengers. They manage to keep from getting caught.
• 1862 - All 3 are caught up in the Confederate draft.
• 1863 - Rupert killed in battle. Jesse deserts soon after, killing a nightwatchman. Brody goes with him. They flee to Kansas.
• 1863-1870 Jesse and Brody take to odd jobs and thieving to get by. They make connections with Amos Barton, a lawman in Kansas that is often willing to overlook accusations against them in exchange for favors. And with Lester 'Skunky' Springer, the owner of the T'áp Trading Post, who was willing to pretend he didn't know the goods they were trading were stolen.
• Spring, 1871 - Brody shot after an altercation with Skunky. A disagreement over money and a bad shipment of whiskey escalated into kidnapping and violence. Jesse suffered a broken leg and fled, saving his own skin but leaving his friend Brody to be hanged. Later that same night, Jesse encounters Winona MacGuire, who agrees to help him.
• Summer 1871 - The pair end up taking shelter from Amos Barton. After his leg heals, Barton asks another 'favor' - bring him a man named 'Efferson'.
• Fall 1871 - Winona MacGuire wises up and sneaks off in the middle of the night. Jesse sets his eyes on a new prize - Mary Newcamp. She's engaged to another man, but why let that stop him?
• Summer 1872 - After another altercation over a stolen wagon, Jesse and his new partner in crime, Macallan Wayne, kill Skunky Springer.
